Our office team has over fifty years combined customer service experience, our culinary team has been trained in some of the latest trends and continues to experience with new techniques. Our sugar team focuses on one of a kind designs that set us apart making your event the talk of the town.
Lori’s passion with desserts and decorated cakes turned into the opening of Desserts by Lori in August, 2010. A team of two has grown to eight employees, all committed to helping our customers create memorable occasions with our custom cakes, desserts and assorted sweets!
Four Generations of baking passion and knowledge opens Desserts by Lori
Hendrick VanderLoo born January 1868, in Appledorn, Netherlands was Lori’s great – grandfather. A baker by trade, and the love of being an entrepreneur led him to open his own bakery. This established a legacy for his children and their children to follow.
Childhood memories for Lori of Grandpa were him bringing home fresh, out-of-the-oven Pop-Tarts! These were a special late night treat when spending the night with Grandma and Grandpa “Loo”.
Grandpa loved baking delicious cakes, cookies and tarts for friends and family. His famous cake had alternating slices of mocha, strawberry, and vanilla frosting. Friends and family received his famous cake in homemade wooden boxes and they brought them back with an order for more!
A fond memory of the Christmas season for Lori was Grandpa serving “Olie Bolen” – fried Dutch Apple Fritters dipped in powdered sugar!
From the Netherlands to Grand Rapids, four generations have a gift of baking passion and sharing it with friends and family.
